<p>I met Dan at a Seminar about 2 years ago and we really clicked.  He is my &#8220;Brother From Another Mother&#8221; as well he is Asian and I am about as white as you get lol.  But we hit it off big time.</p>

<h1>Post Workout Protein &#8211; Taken From Brad Pilon</h1>
<h2>When it comes to how much Post Workout Protein I should eat for muscle building I was wondering if you could tell me what the difference is between ‘whole body protein synthesis’ &amp; ‘mean muscle <a title="Supplement Review – Myofusion Whey Protein" href="http://robkingfitness.com/supplements/myofusio">protein</a> synthesis’?</h2>
<h3>For instance, I am really interested in the benefits of drinking a Post Workout Protein Shake during my workouts since the guy who I buy my protein from said this would help me build muscle.</h3>
<h3>However, I&#8217;m a little worried since I just read this following quote:</h3>
<p>&#8220;During subsequent overnight recovery, whole-body protein synthesis was 19% greater in the protein group compared to the placebo group (P &lt; 0.05).</p>
<p>However, mean muscle protein synthesis rates during 9 h of overnight recovery did not differ between groups and were 0.056 ± 0.004%/h in the protein group and 0.057 ± 0.004%/h in the placebo group (P = 0.89).</p>
<p>We conclude that, even in a fed state, protein and carbohydrate supplementation stimulates muscle protein synthesis during exercise.<br />
Ingestion of protein with carbohydrate during and immediately after exercise improves whole-body protein synthesis but does not further augment muscle protein synthesis rates during 9 h of subsequent overnight recovery.&#8221;</p>
<p>Does this mean that the extra protein DIDN&#8217;T help these people build ANY extra muscle? I&#8217;d like to know the truth about Post Workout Protein.</p>
<p><strong>ANSWER:</strong></p>
<p><em>What you are looking at is two different measurements of protein synthesis in the human body.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Whole body protein synthesis&#8221; is a measurement of the protein synthesis happening in your ENTIRE body. This includes things like your liver, heart, lungs, brain GI Track and your muscles. This measurement does not tell you WHICH part of your body the protein synthesis is happening in, just that it is happening.</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Muscle protein synthesis&#8221; is specifically measuring the amount of protein synthesis that is happening IN your skeletal muscle.</em></p>
<p><em>So from the example you posted above, it is obvious that the post workout protein shake increased whole body protein synthesis, but did not increase skeletal muscle protein synthesis.</em></p>
<p><em>Most likely this means that the extra protein increased protein synthesis in your liver and gastrointestinal tract, but had no measurable effect on your muscles.</em></p>
<p><em>So if the point of taking protein before, during, and after your workouts is to build muscle, then the research you quotes seems to say that there would be no additional muscle building effect.</em></p>
<p><em>This was taken from Brad Pilon&#8217;s website.  Brad is an expert at REAL Fat loss &amp; intermittent fasting.</em></p>

<h2>All joking aside&#8230;Rob and I really got to share a lot of ideas down in Vegas&#8230;one of which was the idea of Intermittent Fasting being used as a tool for fat loss.</h2>
<p>Now when people hear the word “Fasting”&#8230;they tend get a little creeped out.</p>
<p>I can’t blame them.</p>
<p>When I first learned about Fasting, I thought that if I didn’t eat every two hours my metabolism would start slowing down, everything I ate would turn to fat and I would turn into the fat high school kid I once was&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8230;I couldn’t be more wrong.</p>
<p>Here are a couple of myths I had to get over when I first tried fasting was:</p>
<p>- Not eating frequently would destroy my metabolism.  WRONG.- Fasting would make me cranky and leave me with no energy. WRONG.- My body would start looking like a malnourished Kenyan marathon runner. WRONG.</p>
<p>Not the “look” I’m going for&#8230;<a href="http://robkingfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ITforWeightLoss.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-4749" style="margin: 15px;" title="ITforWeightLoss" src="http://robkingfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ITforWeightLoss-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="160" height="240" /></a></p>
<p>So I did what I always do&#8230;I researched to find the truth.</p>
<p>The research I found astounded me&#8230;</p>
<h3>“Intermittent Fasting” is the fastest and easiest way to rapidly melt fat off your body and also delay the aging process significantly by naturally releasing a hormone in your body celebs pay thousands of dollars for.</h3>
<p>How’s that for major benefits?</p>
<p>And on top of that your metabolism will still be burning fat at the same rate.</p>
<p>There is this HUGE lie in the fitness industry where you have to eat 5-6 meals frequently to burn elevate your metabolism and burn fat.  &lt;&#8212; This has been proven to be false.</p>
<p>Let’s get one thing straight:  To elevate metabolism you must exercise (resistance training) and get more lean body mass on your body (muscle).</p>
<p>Eating frequently and types of foods have nothing to do with it.</p>
<p>I won’t get too much into this lie because it just makes my ninja blood boil&#8230;we’ll just talk about the benefits of fasting today&#8230;</p>
<p>Now there are two ways that you can fast:</p>
<p>1) Do a 24 hour fast.  This is where you abstain from foods for a full 24 hours.</p>
<p>2) Do a 16-8 IF (Intermittent Fast).  There is where you’ll do a daily 16 hour fast between the time you sleep to the time you wake up.  So if your last meal is at 8pm, your first meal of the day would be at 12pm the next day.</p>
<p>I employ both methods with my clients with great success.  If fact, I just got a message from a boot camp client who recently lost 10 lbs in ONLY 2 weeks&#8230;</p>
<p>This was done in ONLY 2 weeks</p>

<p>For now I have tons of reasons for you to do Intermittent Fasting&#8230;all of which have to do with your rapidly burning a ton of fat from your body&#8230;and delay the aging process.</p>
<p><strong>Top 7 Reasons to do Intermittent Fasting For Faster Fat Loss</strong></p>
<p><strong>1. Reduced Glucose/Sugar Levels </strong>During a fast your blood sugar levels slowly lowers itself.  By fasting you could decrease your sugar input by anywhere from 15 – 30%.  This means that…</p>
<p><strong>2. Decreased Insulin sensitivity</strong> When you have more insulin sensitivity your body stores more fat as energy.  Fasting drastically lowers your insulin sensitivity and also helps your lose more water retention.  This means you will look leaner with less fat and less water on your body.</p>
<p><strong>3. Increased lipolysis and fat oxidation</strong> This means one thing and one thing only…YOU BURN MORE FAT at a faster pace.</p>
<p><strong>4. Increased Glucagon. </strong>Glucagon is one of the dominant hormones in your body responsible for Fat burning.  Fasting increases the amount of glucagon produced in your body.  This means you have one more tool to burn more fat.</p>
<p><strong>5. Fasting Increases Growth Hormone</strong> which leads to increased fat loss and also slows down the aging process You are able to produce Growth Hormone by up to 6x with short term fasting.  Now Ladies do not be scared of growth hormone.  It’s the main of the hormones responsible for increased fat loss as well as looking younger.</p>
<p><strong>6. Fastest way to eliminate waste from the body and lower inflammation.</strong> Short term fasting actually helps you eliminate waste in your body and can speed up the healing process.  The research is too early to tell but there has been evidence to support short term fasting in prevention of asthma and cancer.</p>

It’s the Easiest way to lose fat PERIOD.</strong> If you want to lose fat and you want to do it as fast as possible then IF is the way to go.  Not only is it fast (no pun intended)…it’s EASY.  All of the reasons you see above are all tools to help enhance your fat loss results.  Add onto the fact that you are literally burning 2000-3000 calories in one sitting during a 24 hour fast makes this almost a no-brainer to incorporate into every fat loss program at least once a week.I realize that even after reading this you may be a little apprehensive to try fasting out&#8230;I can’t blame you because when I first found out about it&#8230;I was pretty skeptical.</p>

<p>The average American can of Coke is 10.91% high fructose corn syrup. That is 45g of sugar, same as 8 tsp of sugar.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">If you aren&#8217;t familiar with high fructose corn syrup it is pretty much some of the worst crap you can put in your body.<a href="http://robkingfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/colas.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4731 aligncenter" style="margin-top: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;" title="colas" src="http://robkingfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/colas.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="224" /></a></p>
<p>So lets be straight that this sh*t is pretty bad for you, yet people are addicted to it.  This is a legal addiction allowed because of profits (I am all for addiction, I just don&#8217;t like who controls what is ok and what is not).</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">I just had a client do one of my <a href="http://robkingfitness.com/21_day_rapid_fat_loss_program" target="_blank">programs</a> and he told me he used to drink 6 cans of pepsi a day.</p>

<p>That is an addiction and it&#8217;s scary.</p>
<p>If you are serious about your health, fitness &amp; your life this crap has no place in your life.</p>
<p>My advice and what I practice is to drink them sparingly.  For me 1 can of cold diet pepsi in a can while dieting is awesome.  I don&#8217;t drink more than one, but that one is amazing.  Otherwise all I drink is Coffee, Water, Green Tea.</p>

<p>I might as well have just said &#8220;You won a million dollars&#8221;, because the look I get is priceless, almost like they are expecting the punch line to come in a bad joke.</p>
<p>But there is no punchline, and the KEY for Fat Loss IS eating more, but there is more to it so keep reading.</p>
<p>Something I have been seeing too often recently is the &#8220;Brainwashing&#8221; from crappy magazines and large &#8220;Fat Loss&#8221; chains that have people counting calories &amp; points.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It &#8220;may&#8221; have worked for some,  but bottom line is this, you can&#8217;t always eat &#8220;Less&#8221;.  It doesn&#8217;t work that way.  You need to get to the point that YOU are EATING MORE for fat loss, not LESS.<a href="http://robkingfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/MetabolicCookingFoods.png"></a><span id="more-4387"></span></p>
<p>Bare with me and let me explain something that you need to know. This is really important and really simple but most people don&#8217;t know about it.</p>
<p><strong>The Thermic Effect Of Food.</strong></p>
<p>Pretty simple it goes like that, you have to eat food and food contains CALORIES. So by eating CERTAIN FOODS you will actually increase your metabolism (HEAT PRODUCTION), therefore you actually can LOSE FAT by eating more!</p>
<p>Now this does NOT mean you can eat what you want and lose fat (silly rabbit if that was the case I would be eating Reese Cups Right now <img src='http://www.robkingfitness.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> .</p>

<p><strong>Metabolic Food + HIT Cardio + Weight Training = FAT LOSS.</strong></p>

<p>I just spent a weekend in Seattle and I learned a TON of Fat Loss &amp; Muscle Building and I have been in this field for 15 years now. I learned a bunch of cool stuff i plan to share with you over the next few weeks.</p>
<p>Back to my point.</p>
<p><strong>Metabolic Food </strong>= Food that BURNS more calories.  IE Lean meat is a better choice than sugar  Your body has to use a lot of energy to break down lean meat, where as sugar requires very little energy.</p>
<p>Another thing that makes food VERY Metabolic are Herbs &amp; Combination&#8217;s of certain foods.</p>
<p><strong>HIT Cardio :</strong> You want an interval based cardio program.  <em><strong>Steady state long duration cardio while watching TV is NOT CARDIO.</strong></em> If you are reading my e-mails and you are still doing this shame on you!  <em><strong> </strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong>Get off that treadmill, do some interval training, sprint training or a metabolic circuit with some weights.</strong></em> 30 seconds work, 30 seconds rest, repeat for 5-10 minutes after weight training and you will get LEANER FAST.</p>

<p><strong>Weights :</strong> Yes weights for fat loss.  There are a TON of reasons why weight training is far superior to cardio for fat loss?  How many long distance runners you know with abs and muscle?</p>
<p>I think I know 1, and he is a FREAK.  So that shows that it isn&#8217;t normal.  Go watch a 10k marathon, if you see muscle I would be surprised.</p>
<p><strong>You NEED WEIGHTS to keep metabolism up,</strong> to keep your body burning more calories 2 days after a hard leg workout, when you are warm and hungry your metabolism is WORKING.  Anyone that lifts weights know this.</p>
<p><strong>So the plan to GET LEANER &amp; BUILD MORE MUSCLE By Rob King </strong></p>
<p><strong>1. Weight Train 3-4 days a week</strong> (Upper/Lower  or Push/Pull), whatever the plan.  Lift 3-4 days a week<br />
<strong>2. Hit some HIT Cardio sessions weight training days AFTER weights</strong>.  15 min.  Done.  On days you don&#8217;t lift do what you like.  Yoga, MMA, BJJ, Crossfit, whatever floats your boat.<br />
3. Learn about The <strong>THERMIC EFFECT OF FOOD</strong></p>
<p><strong> (Diet is 90%), and check out <a href="http://www.GetMetabolicCooking.com" target="_blank">Metabolic Cooking</a> to eat the RIGHT Meals for fat loss (as I said,, EAT TO LOSE).</strong></p>

<p>After my email and blog post yesterday about who cooks &amp; trains on Sunday I can&#8217;t believe the response I got both in terms of Facebook messages &amp; e-mails!</p>
<p>What was even cooler was that a bunch of my clients in return posted what they had prepped for that day showing EXACTLY why I recommend it and preach doing this.  Because it works.</p>
<p>There are numerous reasons to prep your food 1-2 days a week.  I generally recommend that most people prep on Sunday &amp; Wednesday evening.  I think I got the idea from <a href="http://www.GetPrecisionNutrition.com">John Berard</a>i (I strongly suggest you read everything by &#8220;Dr. John&#8221;).</p>
<p>Anyways back to my point, there are many reasons for preparing your food once or twice a week. Here are some of the main reasons, if you have more feel free to comment below.</p>

<ul>
<li>If you have good food available to eat as necessary you have far less desire to go hungry</li>
<li>Hunger leads to spikes in blood sugar levels which can lead to eating the wrong foods</li>
<li>Once you get your blood sugar out of whack your body can&#8217;t burn fat and in turn it stores sugars/fats like crazy</li>
<li>With prepped meals containing protein &amp; essential fats your meals will help stabilize blood sugar all day long</li>
<li>If you eat every 3-4 hours you will not go crazy for food when there is nothing around and you have to cook</li>
</ul>
<p>By preparing your meals IN ADVANCE you can plan your meals and help you stick to your meal plan.  If you don&#8217;t have a meal plan I strongly suggest you get one and start it ASAP.  If you are just eating on the run and not having a plan my guess is that you haven&#8217;t made gains recently, if at all.</p>

<p>If you don&#8217;t plan more than likely you will fail.  Making the right food decisions on the run or making quick decisions because you don&#8217;t have food available will cause you to fail.  I have said a thousand times that you <strong>&#8220;Can&#8217;t out train a bad diet&#8221;</strong>, and this is true (as much as it may suck for all of us lol).</p>

<p>I sent out an email yesterday about Shelby Starnes <a href="http://www.carbcyclingprogram.com" target="_blank">Carb Cycling Program</a> and I had a ton of people e-mailing me wondering what the program was about, but even more so wondering what exactly is &#8220;Carb Cycling?&#8221;.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s my fault for not going into more detail in my e-mail as I assumed most people had an idea of just crazy beneficial carb cycling is for Fat Loss &amp; Building Muscle at the same time, however, I got a lot of e-mail questions wondering what Carb Cycling is!  So here is some information on Carb Cycling.</p>
<p>First off let me say something I can&#8217;t say enough &#8211; Nutrition Is The BIGGEST FACTOR in you Building Muscle &amp; Losing Fat.  Be sure to read that again, and again.  If your nutrition is NOT dialed in I don&#8217;t care how many supplements you take or how much weight you lift, or how long you run on the damn stupid treadmill.</p>
<p>NUTRITION MATTERS MOST FOR RESULTS! Period!<a href="http://robkingfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/carbs.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3919" style="margin: 15px;" title="carbs" src="http://robkingfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/carbs.jpg" alt="" width="235" height="176" /></a></p>
<h2>One thing to know in advance almost ALL BodyBuilders and Athletes who compete at weight class sports use Carb Cycling.</h2>
<p>It allows them to get Muscular AND Leaner at the same time.  I have been doing this for years with great success.</p>
<p>Carb cycling is not some complicated crazy program, it&#8217;s actually very very simple once you get the understanding of the basics down, then you can really dial it in.</p>
<h3>Here is the ciff&#8217;s notes version of Carb Cycling.  On weight training days you have MORE Carbohydrates, on non weight training days you have LESS Carbohydrates.   There you have it, Rocket Science!  That is the premise of carb cycling but once you start looking at details and tweaking, that&#8217;s when the real magic happens.</h3>
<p>First off you have to know where you stand body fat wise.  This is KEY!  If you are above 20% bodyfat then your carbs are going to be cut drastically.   You will go on a very modified low carb diet (for a period of time..not forever).  Then as bodyfat levels come down you add in more carbs.  Pretty cool hey.  Once you get lean like GSP then it&#8217;s all about carb TIMING &amp; Ratios.</p>
<p>Unlike most &#8220;Diets&#8221; (diets don&#8217;t work), Carb Cycling lets you EAT like crazy, just that it&#8217;s specific foods at SPECIFIC times based on your workout program!  This is literally a blueprint for fat loss and gaining muscle at the same time.  I don&#8217;t know many nutritional programs that can do that!<a href="http://www.carbcyclingprogram.com" target="_blank"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3920" style="margin: 15px;" title="CarbCylingTestimonial" src="http://robkingfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/CarbCylingTestimonial-300x221.png" alt="" width="241" height="177" /></a></p>
<p>The main player in making this nutrition plan SO effective is the management of the MOST Anabolic hormone present in your body, good ol INSULIN.  If you aren&#8217;t too familiar with Insulin lets just say it&#8217;s like the crazy ex girlfriend we have all had.  You know, the one that is 50% of the time AMAZING and the other 50% driving you crazy!  Well that&#8217;s insulin!</p>
<p>Insulin can be the trigger to make you build crazy amounts of muscle, BUT it can also cause you to put on a TON of fat if you don&#8217;t know what you are doing with it.  That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s SO important to TIME YOUR CARBOHYDRATES!</p>
