This is a guest blog post and transformation success story from my friend and Heavyweights Training Center Coach Darren Hann.
Darren is one of the nicest and hardest working people I know.
From Geek to Super Hero (sorry Darren I had to :)).
Hello, my name is Darren Hann.
I have never ever been into sports. I don’t even follow hockey on TV.
My world has always revolved around anything related to comic books, television, movies, and computers. If it was geeky, chances are that I was interested in it!
Happily, these passions have led me to become the published author of two books, as well as a producer and writer of several movies and web series.
Unfortunately, never having had an interest in physical activity throughout most of my life also caused me to be overweight and out of shape. At different times I tried going to gyms, counting calories, attending meeting-based programs, and finally the different types of herbal supplements, but nothing ever worked for me.
I always felt that there was something missing.
This “missing piece” meant that weight-loss plans never really worked for me. Looking at things from a geeky point of view made fitness feel like trying to solve a math problem without having all the parts to the equation. It was all very confusing and discouraging.
The more that I tried to lose weight, the more I wound up gaining.
At my heaviest weight, I was almost 230lbs.
It was in November of 2012, while I was filming an episode for our web series that my life started to change.
An actor arrived on set to play her role, and to my amazement she was about half the size she had been the last time we had worked together a few months earlier. I was super-impressed and asked her how she had accomplished this. She told me she went to Heavyweights, and went on to explain a little about how the place and programs worked. To me, this all sounded very interesting. So interesting that the very next day myself and my wife Karen went to Heavyweights to check it out.
As soon as we entered the training facility, we were greeted with the sights and sounds of people working out. There was also a training class in progress. The person coaching the class was not “coaching” the class in the way I would have expected.
He was NOT yelling at the class; instead he was taking the time to make sure that everyone, no matter their size or shape, understood and could do the required exercise that he was teaching.
This was the missing piece to my equation: THE GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT.
No other place or program had it like this, and it was exactly what I needed. I just remember standing there watching him instruct a person on how to do a proper pushup. I thought to myself, “these people care about their clients.” As I was watching the class come to an end, the coach gave a little pep talk, and then had them form two lines and walk past one another giving high fives.
I realized that this was more than a gym. It was a training facility, where they not only train you physically, but mentally as well. I knew then that this was where I belonged!
We immediately signed up for the next available class which was the 21-Day Rapid Fat Loss Program. We haven’t looked back.
Since I joined Heavyweights, I have lost a total of 35 lbs and dropped 11 inches. I have added muscle and gotten stronger than I have ever been in my life. I now no longer take regular headache medication (which I had to do on a daily basis), am no longer pre-diabetic, and I am in the best shape of my life.
I have been certified in “Training for Warriors” level one coaching by world-famous trainer Martin Rooney. I have attended weightlifting seminars put off by national coaches, as well as in-house training seminars on different lifts with the amazing team at Heavyweights.
In November of 2013, I competed in the NL Open PowerLifting Meet, winning 2 gold medals. Yes, me in a PowerLifting Tournament! I still can’t believe I even entered the tournament, let alone bringing home two medals. I can’t thank Rob King, Kevin Farrell, and Josh Sullivan enough for all of their help and guidance along the way. Heavyweights is truly a big family.
I am pleased to say that I now help coach the 21-Day class, and am taking clients for Personal Training sessions. I know what you are going through, as I have gone through it too. I enjoy helping clients to meet and surpass their expectations. If you’re interested in making a change in your life, contact Heavyweights to book a Personal Training Session with me or even add me on Facebook.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story,
