What do YOU want in my Sports Supplement Guide?
I am about 1/3 finished my Sports Supplement Guide.
But before I get too far into it I want to hear from YOU. In this book I want to address what is NEEDED not necessarily what I personally want.
The only way I determine what is needed is by hearing from YOU
So do me a favor, take a few seconds and reply to this post and tell me what you need. Tell me your frustrations, tell me the goods and bads of the Supplement Industry.
You TELL ME what you want and I will make sure to do my best to have it in there for you!
For me personally when I started buying Supplements the biggest issue for me was TRUST. I felt like I was being “Sold” and not “Helped” which is why I started my Store Heavyweights. I wanted to HELP!
Tell me what you think is needed!
My GOAL is to HELP YOU!

I was looking for some of your expertise in how to really gain lean muscle mass. I’ve been eating really well and following a portion of the P90X workout, which helped me lose a lot of fat, I started at 207lbs and am now down to 191 in 6 weeks, but am still loose in certain areas. I take Kre-Alkylyn and Beta Alinine and find the pump good, but it quickly dissipates and I feel already like I’ve plateaued. I know about vasodialation and that’s obviously what I’m experiencing, but I was wondering what you can recommend to push over that edge.
Thanks Rob
rob im just starting out and would like to know what supplements i should take
Hey Rob,
Love your blog. I’m hoping you could help give me some advice on the best supplements to aid in gaining weight and lean muscle mass!
I think it would be really beneficial to have a section dedicated to which supplements you would take based on goals and type of exercise you’re doing. For example if somebody was trying to lose weight and didn’t want to have large muscles either which supplements would be good. Or conversely if somebody was doing a lot of weight training and wanted to bulk up which supplements would be good. This could be applied to different types of interval training or muscle exhaustion exercises etc.
We know there are many types of workouts to list them all but maybe some of the more popular ones like cardio and resistance could have a list of which supplements benefit those types of workouts more than others.
I’d like to see some details on potential side effects as well as benefits. I’m thinking of ephedrine and it seems there is BS both ways concerning this product. I’m sure this applies to other products too, creatine just came to mind, but im wondering if it doesn’t apply to the industry as a whole. Might be beyond the scope of your book but anyway…
I’d like to know what companies have the best feedback on their products. Most stores or online sites seem to have their favorites they like to push. It makes me skeptical as to their motives, there is so many companies out there making supplements surely more than just the big names must make stuff that works!
I really like Hughie’s idea, although it sounds like a lot of work. I’d also be interested in which companies are better than others.
Hey Rob,
Iwould like to knoww the most trusted names in bodybuilding supplements. Ive been working out for the past seven years and im having trouble putting on more weight to hit my goal. My strength is very good but my size is at a stoping point it seems. I would like to know if you have any suggestions for me thanks Rob.
rob i have just started and would like to know what suppliments to use
Stef
when just starting focus on FOOD & TRAINING, supplements will help but Food & training are of the utmost importance (and always are!)
For supplements starting off I’d recommend
1. Good multivitamin
2. Good protein or meal replacement powder
3. Fish Oil.
You can use creatine & some BCAA”s if in your budget but it isn’t essential. Lots of good food and good basics and after a few months you can add more supplements if needed.

I wont say what companies I dont like (id prob get sued ahah)
but companies I like and trust are
-Optimum Nutrition
-Gaspari
-BSN
-Fusion Bodybuilding
-USP Labs
-Rival US
-Cytosport
-ALRI
I could go on and on, but for the most part try some supplements and companies and see what you like. Ill keep posting reviews of waht I like here to keep you updated.
If after 7 years you are having trouble putting on weight you need to look at FOOD & TRAINING.
I can assure you if your not gaining weight you need more quality calories in your diet and a focus on bodybuilding/powerlifting basics like Squats, Deadlifts, Chin Ups etc.
Hope this helps you

Without a doubt big Supplement Chains “push” some lines more than others.
They get rewarded to sell Brand X over Brand Y not because they like it more, but because they get more incentives or kick backs which I HATE! They should be recommending what is BEST FOR YOU not what is BEST FOR THEM!
Keep in mind a LOT of Supplements are made in the same processing facilities and just repackaged for vendors/companies.
I have listed some brands I like above and I am always open to try new products.

Good point here.
Like anything there will always be 2 sides of any story. I think most supplements (including ephedrine as i love it), can be safe. But as a consumer you should take some time and read for yourself.
I dont think “Supplements” are a concern considering most doctors now pass out prescription medications like going to a candy store (which drives me insane) yet some are the first to say “Creatine is bad”, well gee, I guess the Anti Depressents & thyroid meds 1/2 the population are on is totally ok!
Anyways sorry for the rant lol…
Do your research before you use anything that concerns you. But i think most of the food we eat is worse than the supplements we take…. but thats another story.

This is a great point actually! I am debating this but it might be in the 2.0 Supplement Guide.
I have thought about recommending Supplements based on Sports, training goals, etc.
I think it is a great idea and I am putting it in my notes for the Supplement Guide for sure. thank you!

I think P90X is a great program for getting in shape, but as a “bodybuilding” program to build more muscle it isnt really going to do the job.
Its a great program and I love it and have done it many times, but come the end of the day to build muscle you need to overload your CNS (Central Nervous System) and your muscles and cause them to adapt.
Without some heavy basic lifting you just wont cause your body to adapt!
I’d recommend 3 days heavy basics and 3 days of p90x. Focus on LOTS of good food & protein. but prioritize your goals. If #1 goal is to build muscle then focus on JUST THAT GOAL for 6 weeks and then revamp your goals.
make sense?

See my answers above it should help you ok.
I am looking for the healthiest way to gain weight. NOT the quickest, but most efficient. I would like to use supplements that don’t involve cheap substitutes for sugar or any taste enhancing ingredient(like sucralose/ acesulfame potassium). Many care for results but aren’t aware of the risk. Any help regarding this would be awesome!
Could you possibly include information on creatine and how to properly use it(whether your goals are for mass gain, fat loss while maintaining lean muscle mass, etc). Another suggestion would be to give info on the overhyped supplements that don’t really work and give information on how to get the results that the specific supplement is advertised to bring for example, methods of increasing HGH and testosterone opposed to taking T-boosters.
Side effects are one of the most underlooked aspects of purchasing supplements.
Thats pretty general don’t you think.
What supplements & what side effects?
Please follow up your post with INFO not dogma.
Hey Tristan
I will do my best to cover this for sure.
I have never been a big fan of GH Supplements, and test boosters are hit or miss, but a lot of them coming out now are pretty damn effective.
Side effects are just a part of supplements. There are soem pre work out formulas I can tolerate andothers I cant. Side effects woudl also be hard to write other than whats on the can since they will vary from person to person. As for supplements that I have had good experiences with.
Universal Nutrition
USP Labs
Gaspari Nutrition
BSN
What would be nice to have in the guide would be some sort of clinical studies. For example I have cycled Animal Test stacked with Animal Pak, Omega, and pump. I could write a personal experience report.
Also a section on pre workout formulas would be awesome. There are so many and with all the hype its hard to choose one. As for me I have had good experiences with Super Pump 250 from Gaspari, NO Xplode from BSN, and USP Labs jACKED.
Hey I was just hoping to see what supplements have been proven to work, the best in each category and new and up and coming supplements/companies.
Hey Rob,
I was hoping you could help give me some advice on the best supplements for women to use(other than protein)that will not add weight gain. Also, I would be really interested to know which supplements for women are best to take during and after a workout for quicker recovery. Thanks !!
hay rob im currently using maximuscle cyclone n stopped gain it worked brilliant to atart but last couple of months i havent seen much improvement ,n i was wonderin if ur body can come a custom to supplements and that maybe i should change it up abit?
Rob,
Im a little skeptical on the supplement industry knowing that there are many bad products out there that are just marketed chemical experiments. I try to stay away from it as much as i can because of how sketchy the industry is. I’m the type of person that wants to know what is going “in” so i can judge if what im getting “out” is worth while.. I look forward in reading your research.
Keep up the good work,
C
Nice hearing from you Chad,
Dont just think its the “Supplement Industry” that is sketchy. ANY big business is sketchy. If we knew what was in 1/2 our foods we would never eat again lol.
Anything can get a bad wrap. I LOVE Supplements and I always will. I take everything I read with a grain of salt and look at it from not just one point of view.
I still believe the most valuable “research” is customer feedback which is why i value it so much.
There are certain companies I like and trust and I will do my best to keep up with the “inside” as best as I can.
rob,
i agree with whoever said it would be beneficial to know what supplements to take based off of fitness goals. i.e. weight loss vs muscle gain, etc. ALSO, i believe people to think supplementing is a magic way to get stronger and leaner, and have little knowledge of nutrition. supplementing is exactly what it sounds like, it’s meant to be used as a SUPPLEMENT, and should never be the sole source of protein in a persons diet. anyways, just my opinion. keep up the good work and i’m looking forward to your book man!
Hey Mike
Couldn’t agree more with you.
That why i ALWAYS Stress the following
1. GOOD NUTRITION
2. FOCUSED TRAINING
3. Supplements
I always advocate a food base. Protein is protein. No matter if from a food or a container. Keep in mind that most protein sources are maybe not that healthy unless free range fed etc. I eat my fair share of Lean Beef, Turkey, Eggs etc but in all honesty a protein supplement IS healthier. Considering what goes on with our meats whey/caesin etc is healthier.
But that wont stop me from eating my meat sources
I have used EAS protein for years and I love the taste. I gave up using creatine and started taking BCAA pills and find they help “with recovery”. The drinkable BCAA workout drink I tried tasted good, however it made me more thirsty??? What fat burners help with performance and are not jacked with caffeine.
Not sure if this was directly addressed but I think possibly the most beneficial info would be what products are excellent and should be conisdered and what products are essentially garbage/worthless/ or even potentially harmful. And Im talking generic product types not brands or companies. I think we all know Creatine is extremely beneficial and that Ephendrine works if used properly, but what about a detailed and credible assessment of the rest of the stuff available out there. More than anything else, we all have only so much money to devote and we will spend it so help us steer clear of the garbage that is a complete waste of money. You shouldnt need to out any individual companies in the process.
Andrew great post and thanks.
I am in the same boat with you. I want to avoid what isnt worth the money and recommend what is!
Thanks for the feedback!
I think you should add a lot of the things people don’t know about such as how much protein the body can absorb at one time, or how testosterone can change back into estrogen, how caffeine counters nitric oxide by constricting blood vessels but it is in almost every product, and how soy is good for you but could also turn into estrogen. I’ve used these kinds of products for a long time and only learn from GNC store workers, friends, and other lifters. Much of what I learn about how good a product is opinion though, and I am a bargain shopper and always looking to find the best product for the money.
Thanks for the feedback Frank. Ill do my best with it, Ill cover a lot in blog posts also so keep checking back!
Really looking forward to the supp guide. My biggest question is how to navigate the ingredients list on my suppliments. What is really benifical and what is just filler? does compound A do anything? is compond B really just a fancy name for sugar? Is there a sufficient amount of compound C in this product or is it just there because it’s “hot” right now?
This maybe too big of a topic to cover for everything out there right now, but maybe you could give a few pointers as to what to look out for.
Keep up the good work!
Frank, great idea. These are questions that pop up all the time, and are actually fairly complicated. Any more you can think of along the same lines?
Steve funny enough “Reading a Supplement Label” is going to be a blog post & video within the next month.
Lots I can provide on this, but also lots that I can learn as well.
Hey Rob,
I’m still fairly new to using supplements and mostly listens to other people who’s been using them for a while. It’s also sort of trial and error as well to find out which one works well on one’s/my body.
I’ve been reading some of the posts here and I think there’s quite a bit of material already for your book. Keep it simple, I guess, for us to easily understand. Whatever materials left out, would be a great addition to the next editions of your book, which I know a lot of your followers will support. Cheers!
I bet your book is going to be awesome!
Here’s my thing: most of the information out there about supplements, bodybuilding, etc. is geared towards men. Are there particular supplements or combinations of products that women should take, different than what men would take, when trying to gain lean mass?
i can’t wait to read this book, since the when you try to get reviews on supplements everybody got different opions, so i hope this book will clarfiy this.and how much creatine can your body asborb in one day? maybe 5g……
Being a 100% natural I’ve spent years around the ‘circuit’ of supplements, used all kinds but make a point of looking through the hype & read the labels. I also have a FREIND WHO HAS A SUPPLEMENT SHOP – WHAT YOU LEARN IF YOU LOOK HARD ENOUGH IS BOTH INCREDIBLE AS IT IS DISHEARTENING – if you know what I mean ther is a lot of ‘crap out there scaveging round for your cash…as you probably know. A supplement guide is all good!
Hey Rob,
You asked for sugggestions on your new suppliment guide, I am not sure if you have already added “Advance Genetics” and their products DRIVE, ALPHA, GP3, and the new F10 to your guide, but this product is awsome. Chris Has done a great job in the research, development, and promotion of this product, and from what I have read about it, it makes 110% sence on how the product works in your body before, during, and after your training. Thanks for your time, keep up the great work!!

Hi Bob
Chris is a GREAT GUY! I have been dealing with him for YEARS! Highly recommend the line and agree with you fully!
Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks Rob King for the advice you gave me its really working out for my ill give u feed back a month form now to see how i turn out
Hello Mr King,
I would like you opinion, if any, on Force Factor and NOX3.
Thank you,
Vince
Hi Vinc,
I have to be honest I have never heard of them. I will do some reading though.
As well please keep me posted on your end on how you find them. Customer feedback is more important to me than anything.
Rob
I’d like to see more about alternatives to whey protein(cause I’m lactose intolerant) which ones are the best comparitively to whey, any natural/organic products out there would be great.
Thanks!
pro hormones theres loads on the market all claiming to be the best what to look for etc iv been reading up on them for ages and still am non the wiser have to go of the reviews alone.
protein i used to buy the expensive stuff going on the basis if its expensive its better quality i now buy it in basic bulk form and it does the trick is there any vast difference between the two ????
creatine monohydrate or ethel ester ???
fat burners do the new variety (without etherdrine in them) actualy work which are the best ??
Hi Matthew
Ya the whole pro hormone thing is very very overwhelming and changing fast! I am going to touch on it but in all honesty that is a book in itself!
We will cover different creatines and fat burners
Hi Dano
Good point. There are some good alternatives but I would like to find out more.
Can you tolerate Isolates? These seem to go well with lactose intolerance.
Egg protein is a awesome protein that gets overlooked.
Also BCAA’s!! Lots of them!
anoher thing that you could include is muscletech as a company as i have always been sceptical about there products so it would be intresting to find out that as many reviews state they are all hype
or whether infact all the big words on the tub actualy mean somthing
Hi, I am over 40 and I would like to see in your book how much a person my age can take as supplements (including glutamine, creatine, multivitamines and c vitamines) on training days and off days. Thanks.
Another thing that I forgot to ask you…………..how about herbal growth hormone? Are they good or a gimmick? Are Meal replacement powders beneficial, and if yes, at what time is the best to take them?
Thanks
